Bush Studies was published in London in 1902 and Human Toll in 1907. Baynton's short stories and novel display a grim realism and depiction of female suffering which represents an alternative view to the romanticism of the bush.
Barbara Baynton (1857-1929) married a selector in 1880, working on the land and bearing 3 children to him, before he left her in 1887. She moved to Sydney and in 1890 married Thomas Baynton.
