Watkin TENCH (c. 1758-1833) served as a captain of marines on one of the vessels of the First Fleet, and wrote a first hand account of the voyage ("A Narrative of the Expedition to Botany Bay") and the subsequent settlement in New South Wales ("A Complete Account of the Settlement at Port Jackson"). These accounts are amongst the most important documents of early settlement in Australia written by a humane, curious and insightful young man.
